ARA-290 is an 11-amino-acid peptide derived from the helix B region of erythropoietin (EPO). It was developed to retain the tissue-protective and anti-inflammatory activity of EPO while removing the haematopoietic (red-blood-cell-stimulating) activity that limits EPO’s clinical research applications. The compound binds the innate repair receptor (IRR) — a heterodimer of the EPO receptor and the beta-common receptor (CD131) — which is expressed on stressed and injured tissues but not on erythroid progenitors.

Published research from the Araim Pharmaceuticals group and academic collaborators has examined ARA-290 in models of small-fibre neuropathy, sarcoidosis-associated neuropathic pain, diabetic complications, and metabolic inflammation. A 28-day human trial in sarcoidosis-related small-fibre neuropathy reported reductions in patient-reported pain scores and improvements in autonomic symptoms.
